Why Does Europe Have So Many Microstates? #shorts
Well, these are fully sovereign countries smaller than 3,000 square kilometers.
Most of these microstates are leftovers from feudal times in Europe's Middle Ages. This
happened because Europe has been divided and reunited many times over the last 2,000
years.
Examples of microstates include Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, San Marino,
and Vatican City. Each has its own historical and political reasons for being small and
independent.
Andorra, between France and Spain, came about from historical disputes and buffer zones
between Muslim Spain and Christian Europe.
Liechtenstein stayed independent by forming alliances and making strategic moves during
conflicts like the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars. Monaco and San Marino also kept their
sovereignty through diplomacy and neutrality.
