Air contains gases, water vapour and dust particles.

Gases
• Air is a mixture of many gases. Nitrogen forms about 78% of the complete atmosphere.
• Nitrogen is not used by the living organisms directly from the air. Plants get nitrogen with the help of soil bacteria. It is also provided to plants in the form of fertilisers for growth.
• About 21% of the atmosphere comprises oxygen.
• Oxygen also helps in burning.
• Other gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen, argon, neon form the remaining 1%.
• Neon gas is used in colourful glow signs. Argon is used in electric bulbs. Helium
gas is filled in balloons.

Humidity
• The amount of water vapour present in the air is called humidity.
• During the rainy season, humidity in the air increases.
• The coastal regions are more humid than other regions.
• On hot and humid days, we sweat a lot.

Dust and Smoke
Air also contains some particles of dust and smoke. The more the dust and smoke, the more polluted the air becomes.

Uses of Air Pressure in Daily Life
• You use air pressure to drink using a straw. When you suck at the straw, the air in the straw is removed and there is low pressure created in it. The pressure of air on the liquid, in the bottle, forces the liquid to rise in the straw and reach near the mouth.
• A doctor’s syringe works in the same way. When the plunger of the syringe is pushed in, the air from the syringe is removed creating a low pressure. As the plunger is pulled, the air pressure on the liquid, in the medicine bottle, pushes the liquid through the needle.
• A dropper used to fill ink and medicines also works in the same way.
