A Supervolcano is classified as having an eruption magnitude of 8 and has the highest Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) if the amount of deposits in the eruption exceeds 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cu mi). A Supervolcano is formed when magma in the mantle rises into the crust and cannot break through crevices or vents. Over time, enormous pressure builds up in the growing magma basin until it explodes violently through the crust. This can occur in hotspots (such as Yellowstone Caldera) or subduction zones (such as Toba). Massive Supervolcanic eruptions are often associated with large magma states that can cover vast areas of lava and ash. These can cause long-term climate change (such as the induction of the Small Ice Age) and extinction.
