Meet Olga of Kiev, a saint in both the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, but someone you do not want to mess with. Born around 903 CE in Pskov, Russia, Olga was married to Igor, Prince of Kiev, but became a fierce leader after his death. When the Drevlians, a neighboring tribe, murdered her husband, Olga took over as regent for their young son. The Drevlians thought they could easily persuade her to marry their prince, Mal, to end the conflict, but Olga had other plans. She had the emissaries buried alive, burned the chieftains alive in her bath house, and killed 5,000 Drevians at a funeral feast. She even asked for pigeons and sparrows from each house as tribute and attached pieces of sulfur to them. When the birds flew back to their homes, they caused fires that burned the entire city. Olga captured the elders of the city and either killed or enslaved the other captives. Olga of Kiev may have been a saint, but she was definitely not an angel.
