With an allocation of $10 billion over fiscal years 2024 to 2028, the act aims to construct new ports and modernize existing ones, facilitating safe and efficient entry into our nation.
Furthermore, the act addresses the challenges of recruitment and retention by authorizing bonuses and special pay for border patrol agents assigned to remote locations. It also mandates the implementation of a biometric exit data system at all air, land, and seaports within the next five years, strengthening our ability to monitor and track individuals departing the United States.
Moreover, the Dignity Act proposes a comprehensive reform of the U.S. asylum system, ensuring fair and timely assessments of asylum claims within a maximum of 60 days. By establishing five humanitarian campuses along the southern border, the act creates controlled environments where asylum officers conduct interviews and make determinations. These campuses provide essential services, including medical staff, social workers, mental health professionals, child advocates, and legal counsel, ensuring dignity and respect throughout the asylum process and providing a compassionate approach to those seeking asylum.
To alleviate the strain on the U.S. asylum system, the Dignity Act suggests the establishment of five facilities in the Western Hemisphere. These facilities will enable pre-screening for asylum, family reunification for unmarried children under 21 with parents legally in the U.S., and exploration of work visas or paths to citizenship for potential non-citizen workers.
Safeguarding the well-being of unaccompanied minors is a priority addressed in the act. Potential sponsors will undergo criminal history background checks, including biometric samples when necessary.
