Jay Silverheels, born Harold John Smith, was a trailblazing Indigenous actor best known for his iconic role as Tonto in the 'Lone Ranger' series. Born in 1912 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada, Silverheels became the first Native American actor to gain widespread recognition on American television.
Beyond his fame, he was a strong advocate for better roles and opportunities for Native actors in Hollywood. Unfortunately, after suffering a stroke in 1976, his health declined, leading to his passing on March 5, 1980.
