01:21: Whisky Overview
Produced by The Edrington Group, The Famous Grouse is one of the world's most popular Scotch whiskies and has been produced since 1896.
It is a blend and is produced in ex-bourbon American oak casks. However, we have little information with regards to where the various whiskies are sourced.
02:00 - Robe & Appearance
The Famous Grouse has a dark aged white wine robe similar to Sauternes. The tears are quite quick but not as thin as you'd expect. Meanwhile, adding a touch of water produces some whirls, which suggests that it hasn't been chill-filtered.
02:49 - Nose
The Famous Grouse is quite inoffensive with a peppery nose that isn't overbearing. However, it isn't mild. It's not flat as there are some aromas in there even if they're not too intricate or vivid.
There are aromas of speculoos biscuits, red apple, a touch of brine, and some fruitiness from oranges.
04:11 - Palate
The Famous Grouse is quite gentle on the palate and easy to drink. It's not harsh with sweet primary flavours and a prickly mouthfeel.
The opening offers digestive biscuits, brine, and a hint of salted caramel.
Meanwhile, the heart reveals more speculoos biscuit, which hints at an added touch of spice. There's also brewed tea, which is fragrant and slightly tarred while peardrops add a touch of solvency.
05:56 - Finish
The finish is quite short and doesn't linger for very long. The flavour isn't mild and perhaps a touch flat. As for the flavours, it offers butterscotch, sherry, and sultanas.
06:50 - Overall Experience
The Famous Grouse has a classic and recognisable label. There's no packaging, and the whisky features a screw-top cap.
Meanwhile, the occasion versatility is limited. You won't use The Famous Grouse for lavish occasions but it will be consumed casually or as part of cocktails.
Finally, the value for money is very good. In Europe, it's around 15€ while it's around $30 in the USA. There are links above to compare prices.
08:45 - Pairings
The Famous Grouse is a blend that can be paired with mince pies during the festive season. Dark chocolate would also be great but smoked trout, which is more affordable than salmon, is an excellent choice. Furthermore, it has a milder flavour, which is better suited.
Meanwhile, a medium-bodied cigar with a habano wrapper such as the San Cristobal Quintessence would make a pleasant pairing.
10:22 - Conclusion
The Famous Grouse scored 61/100 in the whisky matrix, which isn't bad at all. It's the equivalent of a low 4-star rating. Overall, The Famous Grouse is easy to drink and enjoy when on a budget and can be happily used in a variety of cocktails.
