(7 Jan 1980) Former Indian Premier Mrs Indira Gandhi seized an absolute majority of parliament on tuesday in the most astounding political comeback in india's modern history. As results were still coming in, and a clear victory was indicated, thousands of Gandhi supporters danced in the broad street outside her bungalow to beating drums and whistling pipes. At half-hourly intervals, for 20 of the last 24 hours, Mrs Gandhi emerged to greet her frenzied supporters. Wearing a red sari, Mrs Gandhi smiled and accepted garlands of marigolds and raised her hands to the people.
