Now we are going to witness a true story from history! Hundreds of years ago, a tribe called the Boyas lived on this Boyakonda (hill). They sustained themselves through manual crafts and by selling forest produce like fruits. They even taught archery, including to young children, so they could protect themselves and their families when necessary. They worshipped their village goddess, Gangamma, with great devotion and reverence.
When the Nawabs’ army began expanding their kingdom in South India, they attacked the Boyakonda region. They behaved cruelly, torturing the Boya tribe and killing those who resisted. Witnessing this horrific situation, the villagers prayed fervently to their goddess Gangamma, saying, “You are our only protector in this perilous time.”
Hearing their prayers, the goddess took a fierce form, holding a sword in her hand, and appeared to protect them. With a mighty roar, she leapt into the battlefield, proving that divine power protects its devotees in times of crisis. Her terrifying form, surrounded by divine light, struck fear into the Nawab’s army. In the fierce battle, the sword struck a massive rock, splitting it into two. Terrified by the goddess’s form, the Nawab’s soldiers fled in fear.
Since that time, the villagers began worshipping her as "Ranabheri Gangamma," the goddess who saved them from great peril. The famous Boyakonda temple is located in Chowdepalli Mandal, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh.
