UK-based semiconductor designer Arm is developing its own chip prototype to showcase the capabilities of its designs, according to sources cited by the Financial Times. The move is part of an effort to drive growth and attract new customers as Arm's backer, SoftBank, seeks to boost its earnings ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq exchange in New York later this year. The company typically sells blueprint designs to chip manufacturers, rather than being involved in the development and fabrication of semiconductors. Arm has previously produced test chips with partners such as Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, but the new prototype is said to be "more advanced" than anything produced before. The company has put together a larger team to carry out the project, and has established a new "solutions engineering" team to oversee the development of prototype processors for mobile phones, laptops, and other electronics.
