Grab your ingredients and tools because we are making organic, 3 ingredient bar soap from animal fat! Matthew goes into detail on soap making keys and best practices, with a little history too.
Raw materials:
32 oz. tallow
4.2 oz. lye
12.16 oz. water
1.5 fl. oz. essential oils (optional)
Equipment:
Immersion blender
Soap molds
Silicone spatula
Mixing bowl
Heat safe pot
Thermometer
Gloves
scale
Directions :
Weigh tallow and put it into a pot, allow it to melt and come to 110-120 degrees Fahrenheit
Weigh the water in a heat-safe container. Weigh the sodium hydroxide separately.
Pour sodium hydroxide into water and stir. Do this outside. It will heat up and allow it to cool to 110-120 degrees Fahrenheit
Carefully pour the lye water into the tallow. Use an immersion blender to mix the soap. After a few minutes, it will start to thicken. Mix until it has reached “trace,” the pudding consistency.
Add your essential oils at this point. Mix again until incorporated
Pour soap into molds, after 24 hours your soap can be taken out of the mold and be sliced. Allow it to cure in a well ventilated area for 4 weeks before using
