5∼6월 자외선A 최강...피부 노화의 주범
It's time to bring out the shades and sandals as the mercury rises.
But first, do note that wearing sunscreen is a must-do task... as ultraviolet rays in May and June can cause skin aging.
Cho Sung min explains further.
The month of May this year has kicked off under unusually warm temperatures, prompting not only more outdoor activities, but also lifestyle changes by many people.
But spending more time outside during this time of the year also implies increasing the risks of being affected by ultraviolet rays. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, UV rays get particularly strong in May and June due to the lack of clouds, which act as a natural barrier.
UV rays are differentiated into two different types-- UVA and UVB.
UVA rays penetrate the skin and trigger premature skin aging,... while UVB rays affect the outer skin, causing sunburns and even skin cancer.
But according to the weather agency, UVA rays are the strongest in May and June.
So it is highly recommended to wear sunscreen before heading out, and choosing the right product is the first and most important step.
Sunscreens are either marked with the term SPF or PA.
Lotions with SPF, which stands for sun protection factor, deflects the sunlight and protects the dermis. But in the case of UVA rays, which penetrate deeper the skin surface, PA-labeled sunscreens are more suitable.
PA sunscreens also come in different types.
The sunscreens are followed by plus signs, such as PA+ and PA+++, and so on, depending on the degree of protection the product offers.
Wearing long-sleeve shirts and tops are an easy and fast way of protecting the skin against UV rays, but with temperatures forcing us to seek shorter and lighter clothes, knowing and applying the right sunscreen is the go-to solution to enjoy outdoor activities in a healthy way.
