During Wreck it Ralph I got to channel 20+ years of prior life experience playing mariokart to animate Vanellope showing off her lunatic driving skills. I love combining character and vehicular animation. These shots were that much more fun to work on thanks to Disney’s incredible path tool and car rig.
You could effortlessly compress the chassis and swing the back end for dynamic drift while the main trajectory of the car followed a path you drew with a CV curve on the landscape (that respected alignment and ground contact!) After a while I almost felt like I was swinging a joystick while holding down the ‘R’ button rather than clicking away with a mouse.
I channeled my muscle memory of DK’s Jungle Parkway for the off-road climb. These shots were especially exciting to see enter post-production. The fluid smoke effects blew my mind, and I loved the explosive touch they added to Vanellope blasting through the guardrail.
