Armed officers of the Royal Gibraltar Police boarded the Portuguese flagged general cargo vessel, Sider Venture on Tuesday afternoon.
A video which captures armed police boarding the vessel, has been widely shared across social media.
According to Marine tracking websites, the Sider Venture left the Port of Barranquilla in Colombia fourteen days ago, before travelling to Gibraltar .
GBC understands the vessel is suspected of carrying drugs.
In response to GBC questions, a spokesperson for the Royal Gibraltar Police confirmed an RGP led multi agency operation was underway Tuesday afternoon.
No further information has been confirmed by the RGP at this stage.
