The Tombeau is a musical composition honoring the death of a notable person. This term comes from the french word "tombe" which means tomb. Most of the Tombeaux were written in the 17th century and composed for lute.
With the Tombeau de Mézangeau (1638), the famous French lutenist Ennemond Gaultier (1575-1651) composed the first example of this genre. This piece commemorates the death of Réné Mesangeau (1567-1638), who was probably Gaultier's master.
Mésangeau is considered the first important lutenist of the 17th century. Besides his own works and transcriptions which influenced the development of lute music, he was a pioneer of the new D minor lute tuning. This tuning was a real revolution at the time, spread through Europe and remained the tuning used until the end of the 18th century.
