Footage on social media showed a burning Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company tower – a conical building with glass facades that had become an emblem of the city. Since the conflict erupted in April, nearly 7,500 people have been killed, according to a conservative estimate from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project.
