Former High Court judge Kenneth Hayne presided over the banking royal commission, which revealed illegal and unconscionable behaviour at the heart of some of Australia's biggest and most trusted financial companies. In a recent speech, he lashed a broken political system and a lack of trust in Australia's institutions as the reason for the growing number of royal commissions into other issues such as aged care and mental health. His final report into misconduct in the banking, superannuation and financial services industry, delivered in February, made more than 70 recommendations. But only a small number have been implemented by the government, and some of the witnesses who told their stories say their trust in the financial system is yet to be restored.
