As the clock neared midnight on July 24th, 1916, a cataclysmic event was about to unfold deep beneath the surface of Lake Erie. A colossal explosion shook the underwater depths during construction of Cleveland's latest waterworks tunnel. A pocket of natural gas, lurking 120 feet below the lake’s surface, had ignited with an uncontrollable fury. The force of the blast reverberated through the tunnel, leaving behind a scene of devastation. As the dust began to settle, a grim reality became apparent. Eleven tunnel workers who had ventured into the depths, had tragically perished. Today we take a closer look at the Cleveland Waterworks Disaster and the man whose patented invention, would prove instrumental in the recovery of those lost to the devastation.
