The Northern Ireland Institute of Agricultural Science (NIIAS) hosted a webinar on new plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions across the local economy, including the farming sector.
The Climate Change Committee, an advisory body to the UK government, has recently stated that Northern Ireland could achieve an 82% reduction in emissions by 2050.
But how? And what impact will it have on the agriculture industry?
Indra Thillainathan, a senior analyst at the CCC, discussed the committee’s sixth carbon budget during the webinar.
Indra is currently the lead analyst on reducing emissions in the UK agriculture and land use sectors. She has worked at the CCC for 10 years across different areas, including energy efficiency, local authorities, bioenergy, and biogenic waste.
During the webinar, Indra spoke about the main recommendations that the CCC has made for the farming industry and Northern Ireland as a whole.
She also discussed other UK-wide recommendations, including changing consumer diets away from dairy and meat products. After her presentation, Indra took questions from webinar participants.
The event will be chaired by Peter McCann, NIIAS chairman and Irish Farmers Journal northern correspondent.
