Trump, Sanders take New Hampshire
Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have won the New Hampshire primaries. On the Republicans’ side, the governor of Ohio, John Kasich, came in second. Ted Cruz, who won last week’s Iowa Caucus tied with Jeb Bush for third. Even though Hillary Clinton won the Iowa Caucus by a narrow margin, Sanders beat her in New Hampshire by about 22 percentage points. Over the last 40 years, almost every candidate in both major parties has won either in Iowa or New Hampshire.
500 killed in Aleppo fighting: SOHR
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says fighting in Aleppo province has killed at least 500 people. The monitor says it includes people on all sides and at least 100 civilians. Bashar al Assad’s forces, aided by Russian air strikes, have been trying to retake Aleppo since early February. A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry has rejected US accusations that Russian air strikes have caused a humanitarian crisis in Syria. She also dismissed criticism that Russian bombings were pushing refugees to seek asylum in Europe. Russia has been actively involved in the Syrian war since the end of September.
Ukraine warned by IMF
The managing director of the International Monetary Fund says Ukraine needs to do more for IMF support to continue. Christine Lagarde says "I am concerned about Ukraine's slow progress in improving governance and fighting corruption, and reducing the influence of vested interests in policymaking." The country’s economy minister quit last week, saying "Neither me, nor my team have any desire to serve as a cover-up for the covert corruption, or become puppets for those who, very much like the 'old' government, are trying to exercise control over the flow of public funds."
Steps for a more secure Gmail
Google has announced changes to its email service. The company says it’s to improve security. A broken lock icon will now appear in an email message if it is TO or FROM someone whose email service doesn’t support Transport Layer Security encryption. Google describes TLS as “a protocol that encrypts and delivers mail securely, for both inbound and outbound mail traffic”. But to take advantage of the encryption, both the sender and the recipient need to use email providers that support TLS. And if the message is unauthenticated, it will generate a question mark instead of the sender’s profile photo, corporate logo or avatar.
