In 2007, TIME Magazine named him as “rattan’s first virtuoso.” Today, Kenneth Cobonpue — the multi-awarded Cebuano furniture designer and maker — has proven to be a visionary and masterful design genius ahead of his time.
In 1996, Kenneth started the creative use of natural fibers and materials for his family’s furniture company under his brand KENNETHCOBONPUE®. Over the next two decades, his creations became known worldwide for the masterful way they integrated nature, traditional craft, and innovative technologies. He is the first Filipino to receive the Design for Asia Award in 2005. He has received five Japan Good Design Awards, the grand prize at Singapore International Design Competition, the Design for Asia Award of Hong Kong, the American Society of Interior Design Top Pick selection, the French Coup de Coeur award, and the 2014 Designer of the Year in the first edition of Maison et Objet in Singapore. He was also named a high impact entrepreneur in the 65th Endeavor Entrepreneur Selection in 2016.
Kenneth’s ingenious creations have been used in the sets of CSI Miami, Nip/Tuck, Chuck, Elementary, Suits. Ocean’s Thirteen, and Total Recall. In 2011, he also co-designed a car made of light steel, carbon fiber, and bamboo, pushing the boundaries of melding biodegradable and natural elements with lightweight mechanical and metallic parts.
