In a major embarrassment to the CPM, the Enforcement Directorate has registered a case against Bineesh Kodiyeri, son of CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The Kochi office of the Directorate charged the case as per the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

In a notice sent to the registration department, the ED has asked for details of his properties. It further said: “All properties related to Bineesh Kodiyeri were under its investigation. Any transaction on his immovable assets should be done only after informing the ED Assistant director in Kochi, says notice dated September 11.”

The ED is investigating whether the properties were part of the proceeds of the crime committed under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other related offences.

There are also reports that the ED has given letters to banks seeking details of his bank accounts and bank transactions, as well.

On September 9, the Enforcement Directorate had questioned Bineesh for about 11 hours. It was after the thorough verification of his statements that action was initiated against him.

The investigation agencies got the information that drug mafia’s help has been sought to raise funds for the gold smuggling gang that operated through diplomatic channel at Thiruvananthapuram airport.

The gang had contacted the drug mafia through K T Rameez, who is said to be the kingpin of the gold smuggling gang

Following the busting of the drug racket that included Kochi native Anoop Muhammed, in Bengaluru, Investigation agencies questioned them to find out whether they had any connection with the gold smuggling gang. In the interrogation it was found that Bineesh Kodiyeri had close connections with Anoop Mohammed, who is the main accused in the drug peddling case. Bineesh, in 2014, had helped Anoop in his hotel business. As per the CDR details, Anoop had spoken to Bineesh more than 30 times during April, May 2020.

Meanwhile, the CPM leadership has criticised the CBI and ED, saying that the case was registered against Bineesh Kodiyeru at the behest of the BJP and the Congress leaders in the state.
