Prop 3 would expand Medicaid in Utah, and raise sales tax
ST. GEORGE, Utah - (10/24/18) - Proponents of Proposition 3 are calling it a common sense decision. They say the expansion of Medicaid, by accepting federal dollars and increasing the state’s sales tax on items except for food, will help qualified individuals in need of medical help.
But opponents, including state officials, say the acceptance ties the hands of policy makers and will cost more. The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (GOMB) reported it could be fiscally unsound in the future. Under the proposition, an estimated 150,000 new individuals could be eligible for the program. But some lawmakers are concerned the cost to the state of Utah over ten years would rise over $1 billion dollars.
