BODYBOARD-HOLIDAYS LEAD INSTRUCTOR MATT ‘MAVE’ DAVIES BREAKS DOWN A BACKHAND DROP KNEE CUTBACK.
1. CHOOSE A WAVE WITH A NICE SHOULDER THAT ISN’T TOO STEEP. This will make it easier to learn the move. The steeper waves can make it difficult to maintain control through the turn.
2. WHEN GETTING UP BACKHAND BE CAREFUL NOT TO CATCH YOUR FIN ON THE WAVE FACE AS YOU BRING YOUR FRONT FOOT ROUND.
You need to concentrate on bringing your foot around the side and not catching it on the wave face. If it connects with the water you will fall off.
3. STABILISE YOURSELF BY PULLING UP SLIGHTLY ON THE OUTSIDE RAIL TO GAIN YOUR EDGE.
Be careful not to pull up too much as it will make you bog your rail and fall off.
4. LUNGE UP TO THE TOP OF THE WAVE TO GAIN SPEED.
It’s really important that you go in to the move with speed then you will maximise the speed, power and flow through the cutback.
5. TRANSFER YOUR WEIGHT FROM RAIL TO RAIL TO INITIATE THE TURN. This must be done as smoothly as possible to draw the turn out and look stylish while maintaining speed.
6. LOOK AND LEAN IN TO THE TURN IN ORDER TO MAXIMISE THE CUTBACK. Remember that where you look is where you’ll go. Keep looking through the turn and it will increase your chances of success.
7. RETURN YOUR WEIGHT TO THE INSIDE RAIL TO CONTINUE RIDING DOWN THE LINE OF THE WAVE. To bottom turn out of the move you need to re-engage your rail edge and move on to the next move.
8. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! Enjoy.
