It's the appetizer that's as fun to make as it is to eat! Professional Baker Megan Diaz showed us how to make Feta Date & Almond Phyllo Cigars.
Feta Date & Almond Phyllo Cigars
1/2 package frozen phyllo dough, thawed
3 ounces cream cheese
3 ounces feta cheese
⅓ cup toasted almonds
1/4 cup chopped dates
1 tablespoon fresh thyme
1 teaspoon sumac
1/2 cup salted butter, melted
Sesame seeds for garnish
Preheat oven to 400⁰F. Prepare two baking sheet pans by lining with parchment paper. In a food processor, add the toasted almonds, dates, and fresh thyme and process until finely chopped. Add the cream cheese, feta, and sumac and pulse until mixture is well combined. Transfer the cheese mixture into a piping bag. Place one piece of phyllo on a counter and brush the top with melted butter. Add another piece of phyllo on top and brush again with butter. Place one more piece of phyllo on top. Cut the layered phyllo into 6 pieces. Cut the tip off the piping bag and pipe about 1 tablespoon of filling in a log across one end of each piece of phyllo. Starting from the side with the filling, roll up each piece to resemble a cigar, careful not to roll too tight. Transfer, seam side down to the prepared baking sheets. Repeat the process three more times until you have a total of 24 cigars. Brush the top of each cigar with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 15-18 minutes, rotating the sheet pan halfway through, until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!!
