In this ranked mode of Splatoon 2, there are certain areas of the stage called zones. Your team has to keep them covered in your color of ink to make your countdown timer decrease. If the other team gets control of the zones, then you'll be penalized: even if you regain control, your main countdown timer won't start going down right away.
