Linguistically, ۔the word is derived from the۔ Arabic verb Sa’a (Arabic: سعى) which means۔ “to walk”, “to strive” or “to pursue”. Its technical meaning is to walk between Safa۔ and Marwa in a particular manner a total ۔of seven times.
Safa and Marwa۔ are two small hills, connected to the larger Abu Qubais۔ and Qaiqan mountains, respectively, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, now made part of the Masjid۔ al-Haram.
