This video explains how wind players can approach jazz articulation. This approach will help sections to play better together, sound like a mature group that's been playing together for a while even if they haven't, and of course they'll swing harder!
The key to making this work is to sing a lot, apart from the instrument. Also, you'll want to listen to a lot of jazz music by the greats. For example, in this video I use the song One by One to demonstrate these concepts. Well, there are several recordings of that tune by various players. So, in this example you'd want to listen to a few and decide which phrasing and articulations you'd like to mimic. Compare the Jazz Messengers playing One by One with Wynton leading the section vs Terrance Blanchard vs Freddie Hubbard, etc.
Practice singing and playing these articulations and you will begin to be set apart from the crowd of other musicians that don't know about this (or simply ignore it).
Good luck in your practice!
