Hi there, it's Greg from [ Ссылка ] and today it's Father’s day so I decided I would give you 5 different ways of saying Mother and Father in English.
Ok, before I forget, go to [ Ссылка ] for your free video course on how to sound like a native English speaker. There are five videos all with fantastic tips to help you speak more naturally and improve your pronunciation.
Let’s have a look then first at the different ways to say father in English:
The most common expression is, dad.
Younger children might say, daddy.
And a couple of other different ones are, Pa.
And if we’re talking about our father in the third person, we might say, my old man.
But the most common one, certainly among teenagers and adults is, my dad.
Different ways to say mother, we have:
Mum and Mummy for children or younger children.
In American English they generally say, Mom and Mommy with an O instead of a U.
And in England, in British English in certain areas they say Mam and in other areas they also say, Ma.
So they’re all common ways that people call their mother.
The words "mother" and "father", they’re typically taught. But in natural spoken English, it’s not very common. The most common words are my mum or my dad. And a nice colloquial expression to talk about my mum and my dad or my parents is, my folks.
So there you go, there you have different expressions to call your mother and father, or to refer to your mother and father when you’re talking to other people so: use these words if you want to sound more natural, if you want to sound more like a native English speaker, say my mum and my dad instead of my mother and my father.
