Poet's Biography
gini savage began writing poetry nearly 30 years ago, inspired by a class she took at College of Marin with the wonderful stimulating local teacher Jackie Kudler who introduced her to the poetry of Sharon Olds.
This suddenly gave her permission to write on any topic, from the kitchen sink, to an elusive slippery flying object like a diaphragm. Sharon gave her the world as her subject, neither excluding herself nor any body parts, as fit subject matter, with the understanding that being most personal you can also be most universal (think of Lear’s lament for Cordelia).
When she got into the Squaw Valley Community of Writers summer program in 25 years ago & worked with Galway Kinnell, Sharon Olds, Robert Hass & Brenda Hillman, gini’s whole life changed.
Her work has appeared in several Squaw Reviews, Kumquat Meringue, Spillway, & Marin Poetry Reviews.
In 1997 gini’s Natural Selection appeared as a limited edition chapbook for Radiolarian Press. In the same year the opera composer Jake Heggie (who wrote Dead Man Walking, End of the Affair, Moby Dick) set Natural Selection to music.
She also co-authored a chapbook Triad (1977 Norton Coker Press) with Jules Mann & Karen Newcombe Triad and Loud Nipples with Jules Mann & Ruan Bone.
In 2001 her collection of poetry Gripe Water came out with Nighthawk Press (under a pseudonym gini lorant).
In 2004 the CD Cherries, came out (sweetheart or end it productions) with gini reading her poetry & Natural Selection was performed at Lincoln Center, with music by Jake Heggie & sung by opera singer Nicolle Foland. gini’s poems also appear on Jake Heggie’s CD Faces of Love, sung by Nicolle Foland.
Her second full length collection of poems is forthcoming later this year with Barking Dog Press.
