US media has reported that China has begun building more than 100 new missile silos in a desert area in the west of the country. The US State Department said the developments signal the rapid growth of China's nuclear arsenal. Just last year, the Pentagon had projected that China's warhead stockpile would double. Washington has repeatedly called on China to join the US and Russia in a new arms control treaty.
