[ Ссылка ] [ Ссылка ] We are back in the bad lands of Utah with Tyler. His Youtube channel, Everide, has been showcasing this spectacular scenery for years, and he kindly lent me a pile of footage to use while I recover from a fractured spine. And as always, I am always keen to promote some of the dodgiest low quality riding tips in our sector of the milky way... if not the entire universe. But I must qualify this advice. First, none of my major injuries have been really serious. Like owning a KTM. Learn to be an optimist. This can happen with dirt bike injuries and motocross injuries in hard enduro or extreme enduros. Quite a few guys have asked for tips on coping with a motorbike injury. Learn to be grateful instead of taking your comparative wealth and health in the first world for granted. Unless you are dead, omeone always has it tougher than you. How can you come become a better person through this tough situation? And finally, get fit, eat well, live well. Most of the time I focused on how lucky I was, instead of the negative side. But if I had been paralysed, that would have been a serious test. Ride safe, guys and girls. This spine fracture didn't even need surgery. My shattered lower leg only had me on crutches for four months. My crushed foot was just the standard six weeks on crutches. Other riders have spent years in rehab after multiple operations. They are the experts who are qualified to talk. Two, I am a professional wimp when it comes to pain and coping with setbacks. I might offer dodgy tips on coping with injuries. If you discipline yourself in these respects for everyday life, you will be much better equipped to cope when the shit hits the fan. On a personal level, one of the most useful things for me is watching the world news each night. It really helps you to get life in perspective when each day you hear about civil wars, persecutions, mass rapes, genocide, starvation and infant mortality in other countries. Contrast this with the internet or local news featuring celebrities as heroes, instead of narcissists complaining about first world problems. How successfully did I put all this into practice with my dirt bike injury from hard enduro? Pretty well, I think. Look at children. They can be so much fun. But of course they can be tiring when they are unhappy. They cry, complain endlessly, blame others, lash out. The crazy thing is many of us are still acting like this as adults. Instead of dealing with tough life events, it's tempting to complain. Or blame others. Or expect the government or other people to rescue you with motocross injuries extreme enduro accidents. I rarely complained. But in practice I rarely take my own advice. It's much easier to whinge, whine and blame others or my bike lol. Okay, lets talk about dealing with motorbike injuries. In fact lets talk about dealing with setbacks. Lets take a snapshot of the 20th century. World wars, genocides, the Spanish flu made COVID look like a head cold. Chairman Mao, Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot. It was no picnic. Today? In the first world there are no world wars or civil wars, no hunger, almost zero infant mortality, universal education, good health. But there's are raging problems with opioid addictions, anxiety, obesity, and youth suicide. I suggest we have had it so good, for so long, that our ability to cope with hard times is withering away. We live in a bubble, oblivious to the impending chaos... death of loved one, struck by mental illness, permanent injury, a diagnosis of cancer. Or buying a KTM. Which means this is one of those dreaded philosophical vids. Resilience. It's the ability to handle a crisis, and move on without negative long-term effects. I believe each generation is gradually losing its ability to handle things when life gives you a shit sandwich. How we handle tough times is the mark of maturity. Sure, talk about it and don't repress all those negative feelings, but strive to avoid self pity, blaming others, or expecting others to rescue you. “Accept the terrible responsibility of life, with eyes wide open” Jordan Peterson "Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it" Helen Keller. Tough times are opportunities to grow as a human being. It's a challenge, not a paralysing event. You either take these opportunities, or react to tough times like a child and cry or spit the dummy. Avoid self pity. There is no point in saying 'why me?" As Mark Twain said, "Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." Act, don't react. Don't blame yourself or others. Learn from this setback. Make plans to deal with the situation, then carry them out. Learn how to manage stress in everyday life. Then you will be much better at coping with a serious shit sandwich. In the first world we have never had it so good.
