Join me on a scenic driving tour along highway US 83 going from Wellington, Texas to Paducah, Texas. There was just a winter storm, so the roads are icy!
Wellington, Texas is located in Collingsworth County, Texas. It is also the county seat of Collingsworth County, which means that Wellington, Texas is where the county courthouse for Collingsworth County is located.
Wellignton, Texas has a population of roughly 2000 people. It was founded in 1890. Wellington, Texas gained fame as being the site of a high profile crime committed by the infamous crime duo Bonnie and Clyde.
Wellington, Texas is known for cotton farming. It used to be on a major railway line.
Paducah, Texas is a town south of Wellington. Paducah is located in Cottle County, Texas. Paducah is the county seat of Cottle County, which means that the Cottle County courthouse is located in Paducah, Texas. Paducah is even smaller than Wellington, and only has a population of about 1500 people. Paducah, Texas is named after Paducah, Kentucky.
Both towns are located on US Highway Route 83. Route 83 is even longer than I-10 which many people mistakenly believe is the longest highway in Texas. Both highways are very long because Texas is a very big state with lots of big highways. There is even a stretch of highway where I-10 and Route 83 overlap near Junction, Texas. That is much further south than this driving tour. In the area of this driving tour Route 83 is a smaller highway that connects some pretty small towns. It is a smooth clear road that is easy to drive on, but it does not have many lanes.
Route 83 is dedicated to Vietnam War Veterans. This highway is sometimes referred to as the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.
In many parts of Route 83 the road is very smooth and clear. The speed limit in many sections is 75 miles per hour or roughly 120 kilometers per hour. This is one of the roads with a a higher speed limit than most other roads in the United States.
Besides small towns, Route 83 also will pass through lots of farmland. A predominate crop in the area is cotton.
