Results of Iowa Caucuses
People have voted in the Iowa Caucuses. They’re the first step in the nomination process for this year’s US presidential election. Ted Cruz, a senator from Texas, took first place in the Republican race. And Donald Trump came in second. On the Democrats’ side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a slight lead over Bernie Sanders, with 95 percent of the votes counted. Over the last 40 years, almost every candidate from both major parties who went onto to win the presidency has won either the Iowa or the New Hampshire primaries.

Peace talks ‘officially’ begin
The UN has announced the peace talks in Geneva aimed at ending the war in Syria have formally begun. The High Negotiations Committee representing the Syrian opposition says it will leave the talks with the Assad regime after a ‘few days’ if efforts to end civilian suffering in Syria aren’t taken. The war in Syria has killed at least 260-thousand people and displaced half the country’s population. The UN says it’s working towards a ceasefire and expects the talks to last six months.

Zika is ‘global health emergency’
The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus a global health emergency. The W-H-O’s Director General says there’s an ‘urgent need’ for an ‘international effort’ to learn whether the virus causes birth defects. The declaration opens up access to money and scientific resources worldwide. Meanwhile, Brazil has said it won’t cancel the 2016 Olympics in Rio because of the virus. Authorities say the only people at risk from Zika are pregnant women and that it won’t affect athletes at the games.

Military officers on trial for sex abuses
Two former military officers have gone on trial on charges of abusing human rights during the country’s 40-year conflict. They include accusations they forced 11 women into sexual slavery. The women, all members of the Maya-Q'eqchi community, accuse Guatemalan soldiers of murdering their husbands. They say they were then systematically raped for a year. The two men have denied the allegations.
