King George II built the military fortification of Fort George just North of Inverness after the Battle of Culloden to to stop the Jacobite rising. Even though the rising was ended before it was finished, Fort George has served the military for 250 years and is currently still in use. The position on the Moray Firth makes it great for dolphin watching. Inside, you can visit a military museum, a small room with the history of Culloden and graffiti from either the first or second world war, a room showing how soldiers used to live and a chapel that is still in use. With beautiful Firth views and so much military history, Fort George is worth a visit.
