I’ve had a thought about alignments, and most likely, if you’ve played a good amount of the games in the Shin Megami Tensei series, you’ve had this thought too. Most of the alignment endings in mainline SMT games are… not that compelling or at least heavily skewed for or against one side. Don’t get me wrong, I love these games and I am youtube’s number 1 LAW fan, but even I have to admit, sometimes ATLUS plays favorites depending on the games. It’s interesting to note that this is a problem with mainline specifically as almost all of the spin-off games that do alignment do it really well like Devil Survivor and Raidou 2. I dug a little bit deeper into the topic and wanted to make sure I wasn’t crazy so let’s talk about each alignment ending in every mainline SMT game and see if the theory holds water. Starting with SMT1 and finally ending with the newest release SMTV. Needless to say, there will be spoilers ahead so jump between the timestamps when necessary.
The yhvh and lucifer depictions could use some work and in this smt critique and analysis we'll deep dive into every smt ending and explain the alignment failings or inherent biases. I hope you enjoy the big video essay. There are major spoilers for all of the smt endings and discussing them in detail. With a good amount of time passing after the release of smt 5 I think now is a good time to do an smt analysis on the topic of smt I know best, smt lore. For shin megami tensei analysis or more specifically shin megami tensei alignment and ending analysis, I will be giving a very in depth analysis of the alignment portrayals in all mainline games. I love Shin Megami Tensei, but I have some serious critiques about the alignment systems. My aim with this video essay is to look at all SMT endings from the mainline games, those being SMT 1, SMT 2, SMT 3: Nocturne, Strange Journey, and SMT 5. The shin megami tensei alignment problem has been something I've wanted to talk about for a while, but couldn't find the best way to tackle the subject. I decided on making it my longest video essay yet dedicated to talking about just how big of a problem the alignments in shin megami tensei are. I hope making a video called shin megami tensei's alignment problem doesn't sound like I won't give the game it's fair shake and analyze the alignment portrayals and endings fairly. Regardless, shin megami tensei's alignment problem is something worthy of a lengthy discussion.
