(3 Sep 2015) The head of the United Nations agency for children on Wednesday called on all parties involved in active conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa to "respect the sanctity" of schools and educational institutions in the region.
UNICEF's regional chief, Peter Salama, said he believes lack of access to education is helping drive the increasingly desperate attempts by Middle Eastern asylum seekers to reach Europe.
An estimated 13.7 (m) million school age children from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya and Sudan are not in school, out of a total of 34 million, according to a report released by UNICEF on Thursday.
