(7 Mar 1971) RR7110B UK: THE INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS BILL
A complex and controversial piece of industrial
legislation is presently being debated in the British
House of Commons. It is called the Industrial
Relations Bill and is one of the cornerstones of Prime
Minister Heath's domestic policy. The Bill provides
that all trade unions must register if they want the
protection of the law in trade disputes. If it works, it
should put an end to wild-cat (unofficial) strikes which
have been so damaging to Britain's economy in
recent years. But the Trade Union Movement,
supported by the Labour Party, have bitterly contested
the Bill, claiming that its provisions fetter the unions
and unfairly favour the employers.
