Welcome to the Ron Spomer Outdoors Podcast! In this episode, I answer a question about 45-70 for short distances.
Now ya gotta remember, the 45-70 was initially chambered for the trapdoor Springfield, and that was a really weak rifle action. They had to load that thing at really low pressures. I think that pressure was something like 28,000 CUP. Boy, that's pretty weak. So you do not get a lot of velocity out of those. In the factory loads, they've gotta be safe on those. But handloaders, if you have, say, an 1895 Marlin lever action rifle, you can crank your pressures up because it will handle it. And most of the handloading manuals will give recipes for those as opposed to the trapdoor Springfield style. And then there's the Ruger Number One, an extremely strong falling block action, and you can really push the pressures up on that baby. So, depending on what you're shooting, you're gonna not only do well at short distances, you're gonna do pretty darn well out there at 200 and 250 with the hotter loads if you've got the right rifle for them.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.
