Update: We now use 8 gallon biodegradable trash bags, triple bagged, with a scoop of kitty litter or dirt per use. This is good for two people for up to 2 weeks at a time. When it's full, you can place it in a pit toilet, portable toilet, or landfill.
Guaranteed to be cleaner than 99.9% of campground pit toilets
For my first tiny house basics video I wanted to talk about the cheapest and most minimal but surprisingly sanitary and low maintenance bathroom setup you can have in your camper, van, RV, off grid cabin, tent, etc for when it is viciously cold outside, and even if you enjoyed the hypothermia, the permafrost is too hard to dig a good cathole in anyways.
Do yourself a favor and grab a 5 gallon bucket, luggable loo bucket toilet seat, and some earth rated doggy bags with handles--even if you only use it in an emergency, it will make your below zero camping experience way more enjoyable, sanitary, warm, and sustainable. Nobody likes messing with black water tanks anyways, especially when they're frozen. This system will always works in most all situations, regardless of temperature, access to water or power, or any other limiting factor.
This is a technique that would work great for climbers and remote basecamps. Honestly the best part is not having to mess with a grossly fermented black water tank.
