According to the main artistic conception the composition is to express the whole people's spiritual life through the single man's lot - from birth, through childhood, youth and maturity to the end. Endless way, which people go along, generation after generation. The images of the road, the way, the river of life are the leading ones in this composition”. Thus the composer indicated his choral symphony-drama's "Chimes" idea and plot.
Valery Gavrilin's music has really won people's acknowledgement, deserved by him. Already during the period of his individual musical style formation the composer declared his main principle. He boldly decided not to adhere to the ordinary way of only technological means innovations in his manner of composing. Gavrilin wanted not only outward features of modernity. such as sound, facture, form, he tried to find the new spiritual satiation in art.
Almost twenty years passed since Gavrilin created the “Chimes” score (composer marked the time of its creation 1981-82, and in one of his interviews he admitted to have been writing the composition during seven years). The premiere took place in January 1984 at the Grand Hall of Leningrad Philharmonic Society. The work was performed by the Moscow Chamber choir directed by the distinguished choir-master V N. Minin (the students of the Moscow Gnesins' Musical-Pedagogical Institute choir chamber cast took part in it).
The "Chimes" plot and structure form the complicated many-sided composition. Its name may already evoke the associative sequence, for it's directed exactly to human's memory. Remember, the time chimes, epochs of the Russian life, the Russians' fates. Bell ringing, like the ringing of clock with chimes, very often marks the succession of events in man's fate measuring off its terms.
The composer defines the "Chimes" genre in two ways: the symphony and the performance. Just before the composition's premiure the author told in his interview to the Vologda newspaper: “This composition is closer to the genre of mystery by its form. In Russian its called action... There are the elements of theatre, sort of narrative element. This is something between opera and oratorio”However, the stage statics peculiar to oratorio lacks here. Choristers sing mainly by heart and don't restrain their emotions. Peforming and moving, they demonstrate the playing implicationby the costumes details, the mimicry and gestures.
It may be only guessed, that the central character of the dramatic plot is the outstanding male personage, typical for the Russian literary (folklore and professional) tradition. This character concentrates both historical and some exact modern features of folk disposition: "the outlaw is the poor people's defender."
