Elephants and humans have a highly complex relationship. The humans built their houses in the elephant territory, which made it difficult for them to survive. However, along with these never-ending clashes, there are instances where humans show their utmost kindness to these gentle giants. This is one fantastic instance where you see how kind the humans are.
A gunshot in the back leg has wounded this elephant. The Department of Wildlife Conservation team in the area got the news from a villager who went to the forest to gather some firewood. That villager had spotted this wounded animal limping near the village border. The Department of Wildlife Conservation and the veterinary team were able to spot the elephant immediately.
In this video, you can see how the team prepares the sedative drugs for the animal. Following the usual procedure, they make the tranquilizer and dart it to the animal through a blowpipe. Soon, the gentle giant falls into a deep sleep. But you can see how difficult it is to reach the animal. It is a separate mission to clear the pathway to get to the animal. The elephant collapsed due to the power of the drug, and it was what the team needed to they can clean the wound well. They keep him in the most comfortable position so his breathing is not disturbed.
Several team members busy preparing the injectables while the others try their best to clean the wound. The gunshot wound has been infected secondarily forming an abscess. The abscess was opened surgically to clean and drain the abscess. An officer immediately began cleaning the wound thoroughly using cotton swabs and disinfecting solution. Disinfecting solution is taken in to a syringe and injected in to the wound. This is done to eradicate the infection that has formed further inside the wound. The officer is carefully scraping off the dead and infected tissues, as it is not possible for a wound to heal with necrotic tissues surrounding it.
Meanwhile another team of officers began to administer necessary injectable. Antibiotics, painkillers and multivitamins were injected intramuscularly. These medicines will combat the infection causing microbes, boost immunity, reduce pain and thereby energize the animal within in a short period of time.
The team works in coordination to make the operation a success. Veterinarians and wildlife officers rely on each other for interconnected tasks, making each person responsible for achieving the same goal. This collaboration is evident here: while some officers clear the surroundings, others help the vets clean wounds, prepare medicines, and monitor the animal's behavior.
The pus accumulated inside the abscess were drained out. The officer involved in the operation perform his task with dedication and utmost compassion towards the poor elephant. The wounded area was flushed with a saline solution too.
Everyone is very eager to free this gentle giant from pain. Also, we should respect the team for risking their lives to get along with the wild elephants. The wild ones are unlike the tamed elephants; their behavior is very unpredictable. These elephants are gentle and harmless as long as no one harm them, but they become restless if they sense a threat to themselves.
Then the remaining exudates were also drained out completely with a strenuous effort. Now cleaning the abscess is over and one part of treatment is now coming to an end. Povidone iodine solution was also infused in to the wound as an antibacterial wound dressing. Subsequently, a bluish antiseptic fly repellent spray is applied on the wounded area to externally smear the wound. Then the antiseptic spray was applied on other injected sites in the body too. This step is important to put a stop to any infection that could be building up.
Finally, once the wound is cleaned and settled, they give the revival drug to reverse the sedation, and you can see how the injured elephant gets up and moves. A forest range officer was assigned to monitor the condition of the elephant and report the progress. Accordingly the team will revisit the forest for a follow up treatment. They will provide ongoing medical intervention and continuous care until the elephant is fully healed.
The job the team has done is fantastic. Once the treatment is done, the team always cleans the place and leaves only the footprints in the wild. They are responsible for cleaning the place and returning all the equipment to the relevant areas.
So, finally, this is a beautiful act by a team of experts who are well-concerned about the gentle giants of this beautiful paradise island!
