➟ Hitting rock bottom: His meth addiction almost cost him his life
Adam is an ice addict in recovery. The drug that almost cost him his life is also called crystal meth, meth, or methamphetamine, to name just a few. After trying about every drug since the age of 11, Adam eventually ended up only weighing 52 kilograms in his mid 30's, his body slowly shutting down. He had struggled badly with social anxiety for all his life, had never learned to deal with his emotions in a healthy way, didn't care about anyone but himself, had never had sex without being high, and was having suicidal thoughts.
➟ What it's like to go to rehab for ice addiction
After reaching his rock bottom the Australian was finally ready to accept help. In this video, Adam talks about what it's like to go to rehab, how he made it through his crystal meth detox and how he completely turned his life around.
Going to rehab to receive treatment for his meth addiction was a very emotional time for the Australian. His anxiety reached peak levels, he had suicidal thoughts and was frightened of life without drugs.
Being picked up at the airport, having experienced staff reassuring him on the way to rehab, being welcomed with open arms by his peers and competent staff members at Hope helped Adam to calm down and settle in.
➟ How Adam made it through the crystal meth detox
It took him about a week to somewhat settle down into rehab environment. Adam took his treatment very seriously and followed all the suggestions that were given, such as handing in his phone and money as well as attending all groups and fitness classes every morning... Yet, he still wanted to use every second or third day. Looking back he describes it as a tough process that lasted 6 weeks. But Adam made it through, because he openly talked about his struggles and accepted the help and support that he was offered.
➟ Why going to rehab for ice addiction treatment was the most important decision of his life
Adam stayed at Hope Rehab for 3 months of treatment , realising early on that, because he still wanted to use, a month wouldn’t be enough. Today he says: "It was the best decision I made in my life (...) the most worthwhile decision of my life." For him, rehab means choosing a safe place to come to for detox and treatment.
"I couldn’t handle my social anxiety. I had to learn how to live again without the help of drugs & alcohol. That was a tough process cause my whole identity was drugs from the age of 11 and a half…so I never learned to deal with life at all. I basically used every single day in one form or another. It’s hard to get over that so I definitely needed the support."
➟ This is what really helped Adam with his meth addiction
Adam not only learned how to deal with his social anxiety and emotions, he also realised things about himself that he had never thought possible. Furthermore, he started to form meaningful relationships and eventually found a peace of mind that allows him to enjoy life to the fullest without using crystal meth or drinking alcohol.
What really helped him to get a grip on his ice addiction was not only the program at Hope Rehab that includes fitness, football, groups, outings, mindfulness, etc. but above all, it was the people delivering the program. The team includes people from all walks of life and most of them are addicts in recovery, meaning they have been where the clients are at one point in their lives. Not only they have the qualifications to treat addiction, they also have first-hand experience.
➟ From drug addict at the brink of death to support team manager: "I do know that recovery is worth it"
Adam has made it from being a drug-addicted construction worker in Australia at the brink of death to the manager of the support team at Hope Rehab. "I strongly recommend it. That’s the only way of life for me now. I do know that recovery is worth it. I wasted enough years of my life using drugs."
