The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker was summoned to the police station in Versailles, near Paris at 9am local time on Wednesday where he was held for questioning.
The investigation centres on the alleged attempted blackmail of France and Lyon midfielder Valbuena with a sex tape recorded on a mobile phone.
This arrest comes a fortnight after former France and Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse was interviewed and released as part of the same investigation.
A conversation that took place between Benzema and Valbuena during a meeting of the French national team at the beginning of October is being looked into by investigators.
Three suspects said to be in the "entourage" of several footballers have been officially charged since October.
Attempted blackmail carries a maximum prison sentence of five years in France.
