India recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger, marking five decades of tiger conservation. PM Narendra Modi has visited the Bandipur Tiger Reserve to kick off the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Project Tiger. India houses over 70% of the world's tiger population, with 3,000 tigers. Bandipur tiger reserve was once the private hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Mysore. The Maharaja established a sanctuary in 1931, known as the Venugopala Wildlife Park. Bandipur Tiger Reserve was formed by adding 800 square kilometres to the Venugopala Wildlife Park.
