Professor Matthew Kiernan Is the Chairman of the MND Australia Research Committee. He is the Bushell Chair of Neurology at the University of Sydney, Co-Director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute and Professor of Neurology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Matthew and his research team have established methods to investigate and diagnose neurological diseases, the latter particularly in relation to MND. Currently his team is investigating the mechanisms and the possible prevention of neurodegeneration in motor neurone disease and frontotemporal dementia. They are also involved in clinical trials investigating potential drug treatments for motor neurone disease.
Matthew is recognised nationally and internationally for research excellence and leadership in academic neurology, neuroscience research and teaching.
In 2014 he was awarded the prestigious Forbes Norris Award in recognition of his research excellence and leadership in academic neurology, neuroscience research and teaching.
