The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world, and the hardest one to win.
Just ask Richard Johnson, who has ridden in the joint-most Grand Nationals without ever getting his hands on the trophy.
Ahead of the 2019 renewal, we sat down with the champion jockey and Betway ambassador to discuss his experiences of the race, the memories that stand out most, and how much it would mean to finally tick it off his list.
Highlights from the video include:
- How his first National ride on Celtic Abbey in 1997 was "one of those days that you dreamed of growing up"
- The infamous picture of him hiding in bottom of the fence after being unseated at The Chair by Edmond in 2001
- How the last 100 yards on What's Up Boys in 2002 were "the worst 100 yards I’ve probably ever ridden in"
- How Monkerhostin in 2007 was the outstanding example of a horse that should have been ideal for the National
- Why he was more concerned about AP McCoy than the eventual winner when second on Balthazar King in 2014
- Why it remains a "burning ambition" to win it and “complete the set”
