When you start a team meeting with some kind of ritual, it can be a powerful way to achieve better team alignment. A simple act of gratitude or opening up can keep your team members connected to what really matters to your organization.
For us, we start every one of our meetings by sharing a moment of magic. A moment of magic is a positive experience we create for either a customer or a team member. Whether it’s a promptly returned phone call or stepping in to help, the simple act of sharing these moments keeps customer service front of mind for us.
But meeting rituals can be unique to each organization. What matters is that they help start a team meeting the right way by creating team alignment and bringing attention to what’s important.
For example, my friend and coach, Lee Brower, likes to start his meetings with “BIG,” where “BIG” means “Begin in Gratitude.” This aligns to the team’s priority of having a grateful attitude, which helps them be successful.
You can also end meetings with a ritual. John Foley, once the lead solo pilot of the Blue Angels, ended each of his meetings by having everyone repeat the phrase, “Glad to be here!” This ended each meeting on a high note and got the team pumped up and excited about each mission.
So, how do you choose to start a team meeting? And how does it promote team alignment? Find a ritual that engages and connects the team to what’s important to your company and do it consistently at every meeting. Starting or ending each meeting with a ritual can make your team even more AMAZING.
