How to assist in hatching Call Ducks. These methods can be used in hatching chicks but in my experience not necessary as most chicks and ducks have no problem hatching on their own and it’s best to let nature be. Some Call ducks were bred to have such short necks and beaks it leaves them unable to to hatch on their own. If they do not externally pip and break out of the egg shell within 24 hours on internal pip they can suffocate in the egg. We put our call eggs into lockdown around day 24 and check often for internal pip. Our humidity in incubator at 68%-70%
Once internal pip is noticed I start by poking a small safety hole. After the safety hole is added as a fail safe so the duckling has air to breathe while preparing to hatch, I place egg back in the incubator and wait a full 24 hours to proceed. After a day has passed, if the duckling has not externally pipped on its own. I will widen the safety hole to about the size of a dime. Be sure when you are removing eggshell it is only in the air cell part of the egg. Make sure there is an air pocket between the shell and membrane. Never remove eggshell attached to membrane or else you can break a vein and cause bleeding. If bleeding occurs stop by holding gently a dry paper towel or qtip, and proceed no further. Keep membrane moist with warm water and Vaseline. Make sure to not get any Vaseline on ducklings nostrils.
Every 4 hours slowly chip away a small part of shell widening the hole. Remember ducklings take much longer to hatch than chicks (anywhere from 48-72 hours to absorb yolk sac) be patient and do not rush. If you see chewing motion and yawning that is them absorbing the yolk. Keep membrane moist, and if you see healthy red veins proceed no further. Once you see veins drying up and receding, you can gently push that membrane back and chip away more. Once the veins have receded and you have the air cell part of the egg shell removed, leave duckling in incubator to hatch the rest of the way on their own. When they are ready, they will kick out. Never remove duckling from egg. If the duckling hatches before the yolk sac absorbs they will not make it. If duckling hatches slightly prematurely and abdomen has mild swelling from yolk sac, clean it with Vetricyn and apply Terramycin to the umbilical cord area. You should notice after they dry and fluff up in the incubator, that umbilical area has completely flattened and receded into them and looks like a healthy belly button then.
