STORYLINE :
The US military and Iraqi forces continued the assault against suspected insurgents in the west of the country, near the Syrian border, for a seventh day on Friday.
The "Operation Steel Curtain" offensive involves about 2,500 US forces and 1,000 Iraqis soldiers - including local forces acting as scouts.
According to the US military, its aim is to remove insurgents from the western province of Anbar ahead of Iraq's parliamentary election on December 15.
US commanders believe the area is used to smuggle foreign fighters and weapons into Iraq.
Flares lit up the night-sky in the Qaim area, with bursts of heavy firing audible through the night.
The operation has centered on the cities of Qaim and Husaybah, and the surrounding towns and villages.
A US military officer told reporters on Thursday that US and Iraqi troops in Husaybah had killed 37 insurgents, arrested 165 suspected insurgents and found 28 weapons caches.
Two of the dead are suspected of being regional leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq, officials said.
In Qaim, people searched for people missing after the fighting while others buried some of those who had been killed in the offensive.
There were no estimates available for the civilian casualties.
On Thursday, the spokesman for Iraq's government said 7 (m) million US dollars had been earmarked for compensating families for damaged houses and cars in Husaybah and 35 (m) million US dollars for government buildings and infrastructure projects.
He said some 900 people were forced from their homes by the fighting.
One woman forced to flee said she feared for her fourteen children.
"There is no kerosene or gas, it is very cold and I am worried about my children. I have 14 children and we are now living in a place suitable only for animals," she said.
